I am a Professor of Aeronautics & Astronautics and an Adjunct Professor of Mathematics and Electrical & Computer Engineering at the University of Washington. My research is broadly in the areas of decision-making, control, optimization, networks, and learning, with applications to autonomous aerospace and robotic systems. Over the years, I have worked on areas such as policy optimization, distributed estimation and filtering, network control, formation flight, synchronization and distributed task allocation, data-driven control, multiagent robotics, optimized flight vehicles, constrained trajectory planning and control, among many others.

Although my research has many theoretical and algorithmic facets, it has been extremely rewarding to see it used on flagship NASA missions, multiagent robotics, constellations, and for planetary and lunar landing. I also take pride in the accomplishments of my students who not only did exceptional while at UW, but also became leaders in academia, industry, and government after graduation. My research group has also been very active leading educational and outreach efforts, including our department cubesat, implementing guidance algorithms developed in our group. Over the years, the group has worked on ground and aerial multi-robotic testbeds, wind tunnel aircraft models for active control, indoor navigation, and utilizing game engine for system design.

I received my Ph.D. from USC in 1996, was a member of the Guidance, Navigation, and Analysis group at Jet Propulsion Laboratory from 1996-2000, Visiting Scholar at Caltech (1998-1999), and then an Assistant Professor of Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics at the University of Minnesota from 2000-2002. I was a senior technical advisor for Blue Origin from 2022-2024. My research group is the Robotics, Aerospace, and Information Networks (RAIN) Laboratory; I am the Executive Director of the Joint Center for Aerospace Technology Innovation (JCATI), Fellow of IEEE, Fellow of AIAA, and a member of the WA State Academy of Sciences.
